Expert Guide: Advanced Skimming & Scanning Techniques for IELTS Academic Reading
Lời giải / Bài mẫu
1. The 3-Second Skim
Before reading any passage in detail, spend three seconds scanning the title, subheadings, and the first sentence of each paragraph. This builds a mental scaffold that makes locating answers dramatically faster.
2. Keyword Paraphrasing
IELTS rarely uses the same words in questions and passages. Train yourself to anticipate synonyms. For example, "financial support" might appear as "funding", "monetary assistance", or "economic backing".
3. The 20-Minute Rule
Allocate roughly 20 minutes per passage. If a question stumps you for more than 90 seconds, mark your best guess and move on. Returning later with fresh eyes often yields the answer immediately.
4. Scanning for Numbers and Capitals
When a question contains a date, percentage, or proper noun, scan the passage visually for those specific formats. The human eye is remarkably efficient at spotting numerical patterns amid dense text.
5. The Final Two Minutes
Always reserve two minutes at the end to transfer and verify answers. A surprising number of candidates lose marks not from ignorance but from transcription errors on the answer sheet.
